Warm Up 1/28/16 Make sure you pick up ALL of the note sheets and Warm Up on the pick up table. REMINDER: If you are working on Remediation Sheets to retake an exam, these must be completed by February 8 th ! Last day to retake one of the 3 exams is February 15 th !

Nucleic Acids DNA, RNA, ATP

What is a Nucleic Acid? A complex organic substance present in living cells, especially DNA or RNA, whose molecules consist of many nucleotides linked in a long chain.

Structure Elements: C, H, O, N, P Monomer: Nucleotide DNA – Double stranded (Double Helix) RNA – Single There are 3 Types of Nucleic Acids

DNA – Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid Function: Codes for genetic material/instructions Production: Located on chromosomes in the Nucleus through the process of DNA Replication Can it leave the nucleus? No

RNA – Ribose Nucleic Acid 3 Types of RNA: mRNA, tRNA, rRNA Function: Codes for proteins Production: In the Nucleus through the process of Transcription Can it leave the nucleus? Yes

ATP – Adenosine Triphosphate Function: Provides cellular energy Production: In the Mitochondria through the process of Cellular Respiration

3 Parts to a DNA Nucleotide 1.Phosphate 2.5 Carbon Sugar - Deoxyribose 3.Nitrogenous Bases: Adenine – Thymine (A – T) Cytosine – Guanine (C – G) Sugar- Phosphate Backbone Weak Hydrogen Bond

3 Parts to a RNA Nucleotide 1.Phosphate 2.5 Carbon Sugar - Ribose 3.Nitrogenous Bases: Adenine – Uracil (A – U) Cytosine – Guanine (C – G) Weak Hydrogen Bond

3 Parts to a RNA Nucleotide

DNARNA NAME TYPE OF SUGAR DOUBLE OR SINGLE STRANDED BASE PAIRS CAN IT LEAVE THE NUCLEUS DOUBLE HELIX FUNCTION WHERE IS IT MADE Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid Ribose Nucleic Acid Deoxyribose Ribose Double Single A –T G - C A –U G - C NO YES NO Genetic Code for characteristics Codes for proteins Nucleus

Quick Questions What is the MONOMER of a Nucleic Acid? How is ATP different from DNA and RNA?

DNA Sequencing DNA Sequencing comes from the Nitrogenous Base Pairs. If the initial DNA Strand has a sequence of ATTCGCCA, then the complimentary sequence would be the other part of the pair for DNA sequences, A – T and G – C. Complete the DNA Complimentary Sequence strand in your notes!

RNA Sequencing For an RNA sequence, the A – T pair would be changed to A – U, because Thymine is only in DNA and it is replaced with Uracil in RNA. Complete the RNA Complimentary Sequence Strand in your notes!

Label the HYDROGEN BONDS! On the picture pages in your notes, label the HYDROGEN BONDS on each DNA Strand you are given. Also label the DNA Strand and the RNA Strand.
