Concepts of Engineering Module 2 Test Review
Review Questions Design problems are broken down into sub- problems because smaller problems must be solved in order to solve the overall problem Incremental design means that an existing product or process is modified The design process may not produce a good product because prototypes were not tested adequately
Review Questions What is used to evaluate the quality of a design? Criteria and constraints What is the first step in the design process? Define the problem What is the last step in the design process? Communicate process and results
Review Questions A good design meets constraints A concept screening matrix is used to select a design Implementation means that a product is manufactured A design is refined because testing has found weaknesses in the design
Review Questions Communicating processes and results is done By creating a users manual Searching internally for ideas is called Brainstorming When engineers generate ideas in the design process they use a structured approach
Review Questions How can you tell the difference between a good design and a bad design? A good design meets the requirements of the criteria and stays within the constraints What is the difference between engineering design and other types of design (architectural, fashion, etc.)? Engineering focuses on function (criteria) before form(what it looks like) architecture and fashion place more emphasis on form rather than function.
Review Questions How do you know that your design team has considered enough ideas to ensure that they develop a good design? When each member of a multidisciplinary team has had the opportunity to share in idea generation and if the problem has been completely identified and for criteria and constraints.
Review Questions What are the characteristics of a good problem definition statement? Identifies the root cause, the criteria and constraints in simplest terms and is understood by all members of the design team How do you use team decision-making tools in the design process? Root cause analysis identifies true problem definition, multidisciplinary team allows for broad perspective, brainstorming and ideation generates multiple ideas and concept selection matrix allows for a structured approach to idea selection
Review Questions What are the steps of the design process? Why are they not always completed in order? Define the problem Idea generation and research Idea selection and design Prototype build Prototype testing Communication of process and results The steps of design are not always done order because of what is called concurrent engineering which is when some steps are happening at the same time. For example a model may be being build while generating an idea or second version of a prototype is being built while version is still being tested.
