Year 7 Map work Grid references and measuring distance

Your car breaks down and you need rescuing. You are stuck on your own. You have 10 seconds of life left in your phone battery. You need to let your friend know exactly where you are so they can come to help. You are stuck next to pond in Little Plumpton on a road. You know where you are but your friend doesn’t. How will you guide her to where you are?

This is the map you have!

Your map looks like this How might you use it to help? Road name Village name Near the church GRID REFERENCE!!!

Grid references Tell your partner what square the pond is in! How many figures will you use. As a result, what sort of grid reference is this? Tell her how you worked it out.

Have you got the numbers the right way around? Along the corridor and up the stairs. Eastings – because we are moving east! Northings – because we are moving north!

Each square is 1km 2 A four figure grid reference will put your friend within 1km of where you are. This is good but not if it is night time! How could you put her within 100m of where you are? What would you need to do to the grid square? Think, what is 1000/100?

You don’t have to write on the map the numbers, just guestimate.
