Earth Materials Jeopardy Hosted by: Your Fabulous Science Teacher

 The purpose of this game is for us to have fun, work respectfully together and to review for our test.  This is like Jeopardy because there are categories with 5 questions worth $100 - $500 each.  There is one difference, you will not have to answer in the form of a question. The question is posed to you and you need to give an answer. DO NOT GIVE YOUR ANSWER AS A QUESTION.  Your team agrees on one category and amount. The group’s announcer will tell the teacher which your group has agreed on. (ie. Properties for $300)  Your team will be given time to discuss an answer then the group’s announcer will tell the answer to the teacher.  If your group’s answer is correct your group will earn the money.  Then it moves to the next group’s turn.  When your group has chosen a Daily Double, a cheer will sound. If your team answers the question correctly, your team will earn double the points for that question.  After time is up, we will go to the Final Jeopardy round. Directions will be given at that time! Directions

Mineral $100 Question Daily Double What is a mineral?

Mineral $100 Answer An earth material that is pure, it can’t be split into other substances?

Mineral $200 Question You put a rock sample A into vinegar. It does not fizz. You put rock sample B into vinegar. Its does fizz. What can you conclude?

Mineral $200 Answer Rock sample A does not have calcite in it. Rock sample B does contain calcite.

Mineral $300 Question If the results of a vinegar test is unclear, what else can you do?

Mineral $300 Answer Conduct an evaporation test to look for evidence of calcite in the evaporation dish.

Mineral $400 Question Shelly scratched three minerals and recorded her results below. Put the minerals in order of hardness Mineral KnifePennyFingernail TalcNoYes CalciteNo Yes ApatiteYes

Mineral $400 Answer (hardest-softest) Calcite, Talc, Apatite

Mineral $500 Question What would be a good use for a hard mineral like quartz? A. Carving something into it. B. Using it to write with. C. Making powder with it. D. Making a piece of jewelry with it.

Mineral $500 Answer D. Making jewelry with it.

Evidence $100 Question What is a rock?

Evidence $100 Answer A rock is an earth material made up of many minerals.

Evidence $200 Question How does mixing rocks with water help you learn about them?

Evidence $200 Answer When you mix the rocks with water it allows different materials to separate.

Evidence $300 Question How does evaporation help to study rocks?

Evidence $300 Answer It helps to find out what mineral was dissolved in the water.

Evidence $400 Question Daily Double What does the vinegar test tell you about?

Evidence $400 Answer The vinegar test tells if an earth material contains the mineral calcite.

Evidence $500 Question What tests can you do on rocks to learn about them?

Evidence $500 Answer Scratch test Break it apart Mix it with water Mix it with vinegar Evaporate the liquid Make observations about it

Potluck $100 Question What is your teacher’s first name?

Potluck $100 Answer 4H Paul 4R Amy

Potluck $200 Question Daily Double How many toes are in the room right now?

Potluck $200 Answer Count the number of people in the room and multiply by 10 for the answer.

Potluck $300 Question How many pets live in Mrs. Rambousek’s home?

Potluck $300 Answe She has one pet, a dog named Bailey Lou.

Potluck $400 Question I am filled with holes, but can still can hold water. What am I?

Potluck $400 Answer A Sponge.

Potluck $500 Question There was a boat tied at a dock with a ladder hanging from the top of the boat. The ladder had 7 rungs out of the water. The distance between each rung was 5 inches. It rained for three days. Each day the water rose 2 inches. By the end of the third day, how many rungs of the ladder were out of the water?

Potluck $500 Answer 7 rungs. If the ladder was attached to the top of the boat the boat would continue to float on the top of the water keeping the ladder out of the water too.

Hardness $100 Question What does the scratch test tell you about a rock or mineral?

Hardness $100 Answer The Scratch test tells about the earth materials’ hardness.

Hardness $200 Question What is a good way to test for hardness?

Hardness $200 Answer A good way to test for hardness is to conduct the scratch test.

Hardness $300 Question Daily Double If a mineral can be scratched by a fingernail, could it also be scratched by a penny? A paperclip? How do you know?

Hardness $300 Answer Yes, if a mineral can be scratched by a soft tool like a fingernail, then it can also be scratched by harder tools like a penny or a paperclip.

Hardness $400 Question A paper clip can scratch Mineral A. A paper clip can not scratch mineral B. Which mineral is harder?

Hardness $400 Answer Mineral B is harder because it could not be scratched.

Hardness $500 Question If given three earth materials, explain how you can decide which is hardest and which is softest?

Hardness $500 Answer You could scratch them against one another. If one can be scratched by the other, then the one with the scratch is softer. You can also use tools to scratch each earth material. The one that can be scratched by more things is softer.

Properties $100 Question Name three properties of earth materials geologists use to study rocks and minerals.

Properties $100 Answer Color Weight Hardness Cleavage Light

Properties $200 Question Which three of these four properties of a rock are most important to help identify it? -How shiny it is -The color -The size -The texture

Properties $200 Answer -How shiny it is -The color -The Texture

Properties $300 Question What property is being described in each of the following: A. It is pink B. It is 4 grams C. A fingernail can scratch it.

Properties $300 Answer A.Color B.Weight C.Hardness

Properties $400 Question Which three words tell about size? color, location, diameter, temperature, circumference, depth, hardness, mass

Properties $400 Answer Diameter Circumference Depth Mass

Properties $500 Question Daily Double Shelly found an earth material. Here are her notes. Observations: -It is the size of my palm -There are many colors in it: pink, gray, black, white -The white part can not be scratched by a penny -The gray part can be scratched by a penny Conclusions: -It is a rock. *************************************** -What are three observations to support Shelly’s conclusions?

Properties $500 Answer It has many colors One part can be scratched One part can not be scratched

Final Jeopardy Directions Let’s see where each team is at with points. In just a minute you and your team is going to make a wager on the white boards. Remember that you will lose all “money” you wager if you are incorrect. Remember you will earn all “money” you wager if you are correct. Take 30 seconds right now to record your team’s wager

Final Jeopardy Question Tell how a rock is like a cookie.

Final Jeopardy Answer A rock is like a cookie because each is made up of different things. Cookies are made of ingredients like sugar, flour, eggs, chocolate chips etc. Rocks are made up of minerals such as calcite, quartz and mica.
