Florence Nightingale ( )

Florence Nightingale was born on 12 May 1820 into a rich, upper- class, well-connected British family at the Villa Colombia, in Florence, Italy, and was named after the city of her birth.

Florence Nightingale was a celebrated English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing.

Florence Nightingale came to prominence while serving as a nurse during the Crimean War, where she tended to wounded soldiers.

She was known as "The Lady with the Lamp" after her habit of making rounds at night.

Her notoriety is based in the sanitary reforms that were instituted under her supervision during the Crimean War. By providing proper food, improving sanitary conditions, the mortality rates were reduced from 42% to 2% during the 2 years that she served in the Crimea.

She saved thousands of lives and became very famous.

Florence Nightingale had a lot of political influence and one of her greatest contribution was to call attention to the lack of sanitary conditions and to influence the politicians at home to make changes in the condition of health care facilities and services for the British soldiers.

She wrote two books. «Notes on Hospitals»was a detailed analysis of the construction and sanitary considerations to improve health care facilities and «Notes on Nursing»was written for the «domestic» nurse to give guidance to provide care for the sick at home.

Later she started her own training college for nurses.

In 1883, Nightingale was awarded the Royal Red Cross, and in the Order "For Merit".

On 13 August 1910, at the age of 90, she died peacefully in her sleep in her room at 10 South Street, Mayfair, London.

In 1912 the International Committee of the Red Cross instituted the Florence Nightingale Medal, awarded every two years to nurses or nursing aides for outstanding service. This award is the most honorable for the Sisters of Charity at any point on the globe.

On May 12, the birthday of Florence whole world celebrates the International Day for the nurse.

Florence Nightingale Museum is dedicated to the world's first sister of mercy. It is in the hospital of St. Thomas, where she founded a nursing school.

On the life and fate of Florence Nightingale shot several films and documentaries.

Monuments to Florence Nightingale.

I believe that Florence Nightingale was a great woman who helped the sick. "Sister of Mercy" - this expression was stable precisely because of Florence Nightingale.

Conclusion. We claim Florence Nightingale as the founder of modern nursing..She believed that everyone should have equal access to health care. She opened up a world of nursing. She put her ideas into practice. Her theories and philosophies in nursing are still being utilized today.
