Sentence Structures  A simple sentence consists of one independent clause. An independent clause contains a subject and a predicate and expresses a complete thought. Example: My friend and I went to the amusement park on Saturday.  A compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses that are connected by a comma and a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). A semi-colon may be used instead of a comma and FANBOYS. Example: I went to the amusement park on Saturday, but my brother stayed home. Example: I went to the amusement park on Saturday; my brother stayed home.

o A complex sentence consists of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. Look for the subordinating conjunctions to find the dependent clauses! Sentence Structures (cont.) While he waited at the train station, Joe realized that the train was late. Joe realized that the train was late while he waited at the train station. Mary and Samantha realized that Joe was waiting at the train station after they left on the bus.
