UNIQUELY SINGAPORE

1. FOOD  Singapore’s multi-ethnic culture and heritage has served up a multitude of colourful cuisines, each with unique flavour and aroma.  Iconic dishes in Singapore: Chilli Crab, Chicken Rice, Ice Kachang  Singapore also boasts its food from different cultures and races such as Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western food.

1. FOOD Chilli Crab Chicken Rice

2. SINGLISH  Singlish is rooted in Singapore’s short but tumultuous history. Immigrants of three major ethnicities- Malay, Chinese and Indian came to this island in the 19 th century to establish trade. As time passed, the language Singaporeans spoke merged into one, also known as modern Singlish.

2. SINGLISH  Singlish is a mixture of words that are definitely alien to foreigners but very familiar to locals. It has become an integral part of Singapore culture as it forms out national identity and helps in developing common space.  Singlish shows the part of Singapore that is extremely unique.

2. SINGLISH

3. GARDEN CITY  Singapore is hailed all around the world as the finest garden city. Everywhere in Singapore is beautiful, lush greenery.  Singapore’s garden city campaign began in 1963, when then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew planted a Mempat tree, signifying the start of the campaign.  Till today, the campaign is still ongoing and Singapore continues to be a beautiful garden city.

3. GARDEN CITY  One of the most iconic gardens in Singapore is the Gardens By the Bay, a 101 hectares garden.

4. KIASU CULTURE  Singaporeans are very competitive in nature, wanting to be the best at something, if not everything. Hence, we are known to be very “kiasu”  For example, Singaporean parents send their children to many tuition classes, regardless how expensive they are, just to ensure that their children will do well in their studies and top the class/school in examinations.

4. KIASU CULTURE  Indeed, this picture shows that being kiasu is a uniquely Singaporean thing, and is deeply etched in our culture.

5. ARCHITECTURE  Being home to many different ethnic groups, there are many forms of architecture in Singapore, ranging from historic to modern.  It is not unusual to spot iconic shop houses of the past in the vicinity of state-of-the-art skyscrapers.  Examples of historic architecture: Old parliament Hall, Victoria Theatre, Raffles Hotel etc.

5. ARCHITECTURE  Joo Chiat/Katong is known as the home of the Peranakans.  In this charming corner of Eastern Singapore, many heritage shophouses and quaint stores and eateries can be seen, showing off unique traditional Peranakan culture.

6. ABBREVIATIONS  Singaporeans love things to be sweet and short.  Hence, abbreviations have blended into our everyday lives, making them much simpler.  For example, Singaporeans would rather say “The GSS is coming up soon!” rather than “The Great Singapore Sale is coming up soon!”.  “Are you voting for PAP or WP?”  “Are you driving to school via PIE, ECP or MCE?”
