INTERNET & iMAC a CHC2D Canadian History Presentation

NEW PROBLEMS illegal copying had been a problem ever since the introduction of recordable tape in the seventies then, the Canadian Supreme Court ruled that recording broadcasts were not illegal because it is impossible to stop a broadcast from reaching your tape but in the nineties, this took a whole different spin because of computers optical media was invented for that industry as a storage medium, and when the computer companies began to produce CD burners, it made duplicating the music without any loss of quality much easier music was just getting a handle on it when the computer industry began to figure out how to send music through the international network of computers — or Internet — using the new format, MP3

NEW TECHNOLOGY the Internet was actually created for the U.S. military with assistance from M.I.T. and CalTech the idea was to come up with a communication system that would not break down if one of the routes between nodes broke down when the network was finished, the military wanted greater security, so the network was handed to the universities to use universities used it primarily for academic discussions — in what’s now become Google Groups it was duplicated by non-academics with their own computers you could call up on the phone with as Bulletin Board Systems (BBSes)

NEW TECHNOLOGY Bill Gates saw the commercial potential for the network, and began to sell the idea of the World Wide Web as a new way for companies to reach their customers the media picked up on this and promoted the idea of commercial Internet soon, Internet Service Providers (or ISPs) began to crop up offering services that smaller connections couldn’t the most popular service was America On-Line (or AOL) who’s services introduced that famous phrase “You’ve got mail.”

NEW APPROACH another key change to the computer industry was the introduction of the iMac the Macintosh computing system with its visual approach to interaction was not something new: it was first introduced in 1984 through the Superbowl what made iMac unique was that the “egg shell” version came in multiple colours, so that the computer would match your decor instead of needing to change your house around the computer those who were not into building their own system thought this was a fantastic move and Apple was saved from the brink of closure by the end of the decade, the egg shell was being abandoned for an upcoming, more slim down monitor and base unit

NEW BOOM the advancement of technology in the nineties is incredibly vital to know if you live in Ottawa, Canada companies like Northern Telecom (Nortel), Newbridge Networks, Cognos, Corel and JDS Uniphase led a rapid growth of telecommunications and software development from the National Capital Region Ottawa got dubbed Silicon Valley North because it was only second to California for high tech development at a time when the federal government was shrinking down the public service to help balance the budget, the boom of new companies opening (mostly in Kanata) was keeping Ottawa from shrinking its population eventually, the boom had to go bust, but that hasn’t stopped Ottawa from continuing its dedication to technology: Shopify, one of the hottest Internet companies out there today, is headquartered in the Byward Market
