SESSION 2 NOVEMBER 3, 2015 ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF INSTRUCTION

BOARD CONFIGURATION Objective / Big Question: I will recognize and plan for instruction that will correspond exactly with my objective Bell Work: QuickWrite – what are the two parts of an instructional objective? Language Objective & Key Vocabulary: I will analyze my plans for alignment of objectives and instruction Relevance: Instructional best practices, evaluation Homework Expectations: Apply the EEI components to classroom instruction

WHAT ARE THEY? Learning target Means to Measure Learning (Criteria for success)

WHY EEI Research-Based Teacher decision- making model created by Madeline Hunter and supported by follow-up research Evaluation

WHAT IS EEI? S elect appropriate objective T each to the objective U se the principles of learning M onitor and adjust

WHAT WILL YOU BE TEACHING SOON? Think of an upcoming lesson … Write an objective for the lesson that includes the learning target and the criteria for success Task analyze – what will students have to do to demonstrate mastery?

TEACHER ACTIONS I nformation R espond A ctivities Q uestions

TEACH TO THE OBJECTIVE Distinguish between relevant and related Analyze activities for relevance Plan for one-to-one correspondence between objective and instruction

RELEVANT OR RELATED? Objective- Analyze the interactions between the major systems (geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere) that make up the Earth. Read about the history of Biosphere 2 in Southern Arizona Read and summarize data collected by researchers at Biosphere 2

RELEVANT OR RELATED? Objective- Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare Watch a clip of a scene from Hamlet and summarize the characters’ interactions with one another View and summarize a video about the Globe Theater of 1600s London

RELEVANT OR RELATED? Objective- Analyze the influences of Ancient Egypt on the modern world Create a model of a pyramid physically or electronically Create a Venn Diagram showing the similarities and differences between the government of Ancient Egypt and the U.S. government

NOW WHAT?? Look at your upcoming lesson objectives. Do they have the two parts? Look at your planned activities. Is there a one to one correspondence or they merely related?
