REGIONAL CONCEPTS: PHYSICAL REGIONS Francisci WG.3a

What is a Region? A region is an area of earth’s surface that shares unifying (the same) physical or cultural characteristics. Regions are used to simplify study and understanding of the world.

Types of Regions: Sahara Desert Region:  Area with arid (desert) climate  Located in northern Africa  Getting bigger due to desertification.

Types of Regions: Taiga Region:  The areas with large coniferous forests  Located in subarctic climates of Canada (North America) and Siberian Russia (Asia)

Types of Regions: Rain Forest Region:  Areas of lush vegetation located in the low latitudes  Found on or near the equator  Most are suffering from deforestation

Types of Regions: Great Plains Region:  Area of grasslands found in the central area of North America  Area of great agricultural activity – The Wheat Belt, Dairy Belt  Where tornado alley is found

Types of Regions: Low Countries Region:  Regions of the world that are either at sea level (0 feet) or below sea level in elevation  Examples: Bangladesh (South Asia) and Netherlands (Europe)
