Early Statehood

Annexation 1836 – Texas wants to be annexed but Unites States is not interested. – Mexico may start a war. – It would increase the number of slave states. – Texas debt Lamar takes over as President and is not interested in annexation.

Annexation April 1844 – Treaty of Annexation – United States Senate votes it down. But, the United States is interested in territorial expansion and Manifest Destiny

Annexation Manifest Destiny – It is the destiny of the Unites States to settle North America from coast to coast. Settlers want the fertile land of Texas and Oregon.

Annexation 1844 Presidential Election – Henry Clay vs. Andrew Polk. – No annexation vs. Manifest Destiny Polk Wins

Annexation Concerns of Other Countries – Mexico concerned about expansion west of Texas into Mexican territory. – England concerned about growing power of the United States. – Texas becomes 28 th state in United States in 1845.
