The United Nations and the Legacy of World War II Ki Harris US History II 5/8/14 Term 4
Background After the second World War II the United Nations was formed. The UN replaced the League of Nations. The UN was formed to have international peace and protection developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.
UN mission The mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.
Leadership and Membership The current Secretary-General of the UN is Ban Ki-moon. There are 193 countries in the UN. The headquarters is located in a complex in New York City.
General Assembly The General Assembly has 193 Member States of the UN, it provides a conversation for multilateral discussion of international issues including peace and security. The General Assembly makes decisions on important questions, such as those on peace and security. Each country gets 1 vote.
Security Council Security Council is responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security. There are 15 countries in the Security Council. China, France,Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
International Court of Justice The International Court of Justice is in the Hague (Netherlands). The International Court of Justice hears cases from everything, from establishing maritime boundaries to territorial sovereignty, and the use of force.
World Health Organization The WHO headquarters is situated on the outskirts of Geneva at the end of Avenue Appia. The job of the WHO stated as "the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health," with health being very broadly defined as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
UNICEF The UNICEF stands for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. The UNICEF was created to devoted to aiding national efforts to improve the health, nutrition, education, and general welfare of children. The UNICEF works with governments and partners to scale up routine immunization services to make full immunization a part of every child’s life.
Summary I learned that the UN was created after the first World War and was made for countries to come to an agreement on things like war and children's health. The group that is in the UN that helps kids is called the UNICEF. The UNICEF stands for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. It was created to improve the health, nutrition, education, and general welfare of children.
