Pronoun  Takes the place of a noun. Jack went to the mall. ○ He went to the mall. The felon stole the woman’s purse. ○ The felon stole her purse. Can function as an adjective. ○ My dog likes his food on the floor rather than in his dish.

Adverb  Modifies (describes) a verb, an adjective, or another adverb  He walked quickly into the building to get out of the rain.  I am very excited about my trip to France.  I moved extremely cautiously through the haunted house.

Adverb  Answers the questions when, where, how, to what degree.  When Yesterday, we learned about verbs and adjectives.  Where The garbage was scattered everywhere.  How I came cautiously around the corner.  To what degree I am quite sure I need new glasses.

Interjection  A word used to express strong feeling or sudden emotion.  Wow! That’s a huge storm cloud.  Ahh! There’s a spider on the floor.  Yikes! That pan is hot.

Conjunction  A word used to connect words or sentences  For  And  Nor  But  Or  Yet  So

Conjunctions  Paul and Mike went to the football game and then to get pizza.  When conjunctions connect sentences, use a comma. The dog rounded the corner, but he lost his footing and slid into the pool. Karen is great at math, yet she struggles in science.

Prepositions  A word that precedes (comes before) an noun and describes its relationship.  The bottle is filled with juice.  Put your book under the desk.  Give me your homework before you leave.
