EARLY LIFE  Born October 30 th, 1735, Braintree (now Quincy), MA  John took advantage of the freedom given by his parents.  He cared little for school and enjoyed all types of outdoor activities.  John's favorite activity was hunting

HOME STATE  John was born in Massachusetts and he died in Massachusetts  His father, a deacon in the Congregational Church, earned a living as a farmer and shoemaker in Braintree  Entered Harvard College at age fifteen  Taught in a Latin school in Worcester, Massachusetts, to earn the tuition fees to study law

LATER LIFE  John failed to be elected a 2 nd time  Retired and threw himself into writing and commentary  Died July 4 th, 1826, Quincy, MA  Died from congestive heart failure  His last words were “Thomas Jefferson still survives”

FAMILY INFO  Married his third cousin Abagail Smith  Had six children, 3 girls and 3 boys  Abagail(1765), John Quincy(1767), Susanna(1768), Charles(1770), Thomas Boylston(1772), and Elizabeth(1777)  John Quincy would later become the sixth president of The United States of America

3 UNIQUE THINGS  He was the only president of the first five U.S. presidents not to be a slaveholder  He was the first president to live in the White House, he moved in before it was finished  Adams died on the same day, five hours apart, as his rival Thomas Jefferson on July 4 th, 1826, the 50 th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence

WHY IS HE A FOUNDING FATHER?  Adams is considered a Founding Father because he demonstrated what common men could accomplish in a land of freedom. He became a school teacher, renowned lawyer, leading revolutionary, Vice President, and second President of the United States.  First vice-president. Helped draft the Declaration of Independence and negotiate the peace agreement with Great Britain to end the Revolutionary War. Served as the first American Minister to Great Britain for 2 years and 11 months
