PROFESSIONAL ALLIANCES HMGT 2308 Lynda Dias Living Lab Fourth Year Fellows

Course Description Professional Alliances The critical role of networking in the hospitality industry and its relation to individual professional development and career goals are explored. Focus on interviewing techniques, preparation of resume and cover letter, development of e- portfolio, and the essentials of business etiquette.

Revised course Industry needs and new technologies prompted revision of a 10-year old career development course. From 1-credit to 2-credits 7-week to 15-week Post Living Lab OpenLab assignment via ePortfolio

Prior Course Objectives At the completion of HMGT 2306, students will be able to a.Recognize and develop professional relationships and establish a network in the hospitality industry. b.Document networks in the form of a file of ‘net worker builder’ cards. c.Attain a membership in a professional industry association. d.Participate in a departmental and/or related alumni event.

Student Learning Outcomes a. Develop and refine career goals and career plan (Gen Ed: Professional/Personal development) b. Write and evaluate professional career documents (Gen Ed: Communication) c. Explain and demonstrate business ethics, etiquette and professional image (Gen Ed: Professional/Personal development) d. Demonstrate interviewing skills (Gen Ed: Communication; HMGT Skill) e. Demonstrate networking skills (Gen Ed: Communication)

“THE RÉSUMÉ” Introduction to resumes as a genre of professional writing. Explore examples of when resumes are required, such as applying for an internship, a job, or when creating a e- portfolio of one’s work. Students will create a ePortfolio profile on OpenLab that will include a professional quality résumé

“THE RÉSUMÉ” Assignment Learning Goals 1. Understand the purpose, format, and effectiveness of a resume by examining and discussing sample resumes 2. Create a ePortfolio Profile on OpenLab 3. Develop a working resume by using the Optimal Resume and post a professional quality résumé on OpenLab 4. Recognize the résumé as a marketing tool in the internship and job search
