T OP 10 T IPS AND C AVEATS 2. The major purpose of any visual aid is to help make a subject clear, to build audience interest, and to reinforce the message. Visual aids should not be the focal point of the speech, nor should they be the reason for the speech. But they can be of great help in insuring that your audience understands your information. Raymond Ross has compiled some useful information of his own on visual aids, as well as culled some information from Edgar Dale, an expert in audio-visual aids. The information is presented here. Visual aids can generally be classified in three ways. Visual aids that allow the audience to do or experience something: these are the most concrete types, and usually the most interesting. Allowing theaudience to do something might include dramatized experiences, contrived experiences, and direct purposeful experiences. Visual aids that allow the audience to see something: this type is less concrete than doing, but is more appropriate in some situations. Types might include demonstrations, study trips, exhibits, educational television, motion pictures, still pictures, or recordings. 5
