FINISH POETRY PRESENTATIONS The Line (or, building blocks for poetry)

CREATE EKPHRASTIC POETRY An ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art. Through the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the “action” of a painting or sculpture, the poet may amplify and expand its meaning.

PRACTICING POETRY Haiku ( 俳句 high-koo) are short poems that use sensory language to capture a feeling or image. They are often inspired by an element of nature, a moment of beauty or a poignant experience. Japanese haiku traditionally consist of 17 on, or sounds, divided into three phrases: 5 sounds, 7 sounds, and 5 sounds. English poets interpreted on as syllables. Let’s go back to the painting and see what we can create.

YOUR TURN Go to the Smithsonian: Find a work. Create your first draft of a poem. Homework: Find more art. Practice Visual Rhetoric analysis. Do this twice (or more). Finish your Ekphrastic Poem (due next class).

Bring your first selected book to class on Thursday for our first Book Club meeting  Some of you have not yet given me your signed book selection form.  This makes Mr. Johnson fear you will not have books on time and be prepared for class activities.
