Subject-Verb Agreement Basic principle: Singular subjects need singular verbs Plural subjects need plural verbs. My little brother is evil. My little brothers are evil. *Remember, it is the subject that determines the verb!

Fill in the blank… The computers ____ the internet. (has/have) The room with the computers ____ a class in it right now. (has/have) My friend from Tokyo who ____ three dogs is going to the park. (has/have) The doctor who has helped thousands of patients ____ over there. (is/are) People ____ responsible for their own ____. (is/are), (life/lives)

Rule #1 Anyone, anybody, everyone, everybody, each, someone, no one, nobody are always considered singular and therefore require a singular verb Everyone has done the homework. Someone is waiting for you outside. *Even though everyone and everybody might sound plural, be sure to use them with singular verbs!

Fill in the blank… Jamie and Tom ____ on the bus. Christina ____ with them. (is/are) Each of us ____ responsible for doing our work. (is/are) No one ____ how the keys fell on the floor. (know/knows)

Rule #2 Some and all can be singular or plural, depending on whether the item they are referring to is countable Examples of uncountable nouns: water, love, money, sugar, music hint: Can we put “a” in front of it? Some of the books are on the shelf. All of the water has evaporated out of the glass.

Fill in the blank… This rice ____ delicious. (tastes/taste) The girls ____ going swimming in the water. (is/are) The news ____ very important. (is/are)

Rule #3 Like collective nouns that can trick us into thinking things are plural when they’re actually singular, there are other words that we would think are singular that are plural. My glasses are on the bed. My pants were torn. *But if it says “pair of” before, it is singular The pair of pants is in the closet.
