Reinforcement Schedule INTERVALS = TIME Does it Deal with Time? Fixed Interval (FI) – A reinforcer is delivered for the first response after a preset time.
 Organisms learn by associating an action or behavior with a reward or punishment.

Operant Conditioning Type of learning in which the frequency of a behavior depends on the consequence that follows that behavior. Another form of learning.
CLASSICAL VS. OPERANT CONDITIONING  With classical conditioning you can teach a dog to salivate, but you cannot teach it to roll over. Why?  Classical.

Operant Conditioning Notes Worksheet AGENDA/ANNOUNCEMENTS HW/ Coming up: Partial Schedules of Reinforcement Worksheet due tomorrow at the beginning of class! Read pg by tomorrow! A Peaceful Thanksgiving Dinner due Friday, December 4 th ! Learning Unit Test- Friday, December 4 th Study guide, graphic organizer (for extra credit), flashcards due Friday, December 4 th ! Goal(s): To be able to explain and differentiate between positive and negative reinforcement AND positive and negative punishment. To be able to differentiate between primary and secondary reinforcers. To be able to distinguish between the four different schedules of reinforcement: -Fixed and variable ratio -Fixed and variable interval

Law of Effect: rewarded behavior is likely to be repeated. Studied at cats inside a ‘puzzle box’ - found that a well-practiced cat will find the way out. If an action brings an reward, Thorndike believed that that action becomes stamped into the mind. Behavior changes because of the consequences of that behavior. THORNDIKE’S LAW OF EFFECT Previous theories had emphasized practice or repetition. Thorndike gave equal consideration to the effects of reward or punishment, success or failure, & satisfaction or annoyance on the learner.

YOUTUBE: Thorndike’S PUZZLE BOX FOR CATS

Instead of antecedents of behavior (what comes before), a new focus on consequences of behavior. BF Skinner argued that, CC did not explain complex behavior. 2 categories of consequences: Reinforcement & Punishment Reinforcement is designed to increase the probability that a behavior will occur again. Punishment is designed to decrease the probability that a behavior will occur again. B.F.SKINNER

Write the following slide down!

PositiveNegative Reinforcement (increase response) Add goodRemove bad Punishment (decrease response) Add badRemove good REINFORCEMENT & PUNISHMENT

Directions: For each of the statements presented, determine if this is an example of negative reinforcement, positive reinforcement, negative punishment or positive punishment.

A.Positive Reinforcement B.Negative Reinforcement C.Positive Punishment D.Negative Punishment 1.When Olivia makes rude noises at the dinner table, she gets her mouth washed out with soap. She doesn’t make rude noises that often anymore. 2.Little Joey gets yelled at when he acts up in class. He likes the attentions and now he’s acting up even more. 3.Because Tameka earned an A in each of her classes, she doesn’t have to do her usual chore of vacuuming this month. She’s now even more motivated to study. 4.Ray came home past his curfew, so he was not allowed to drive for the following week. He hasn’t missed a curfew since. +Rei +Pun -Rei -Pun

5.Maria put in extra hours at work helping her boss finish a major project. She received a big bonus for her contributions. She’s now looking for other ways to contribute at work. 6.Chandler’s girlfriend, Monica, keeps bugging him to take her dancing. He finally agrees, and she quits bugging him. The next time she starts bugging him, he quickly agrees to do whatever it is. (Chandler’s behavior is changing.) 5.Monica’s boyfriend, Chandler, gives in when she starts bugging him about something. Now whenever she wants something, she just starts bugging him. (Monica’s behavior is changing.) +Rei -Rei +Rei A.Positive Reinforcement B.Negative Reinforcement C.Positive Punishment D.Negative Punishment

SUMMARIZE AND PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR NOTES BY USING PG :  Primary reinforcer  Secondary reinforcer  Schedules of reinforcement  Schedule of continuous reinforcement  Schedule of partial reinforcement

LET’S GO OVER THOSE!

WRITE THE DEFINITIONS OF THE FOLLOWING ON THE WORKSHEET BY USING PG :  Fixed-ratio schedule (FR)  Variable-ratio schedule (VR)  Fixed-interval schedule (FI)  Variable-interval schedule (VI)

 Due tomorrow at the beginning of class! WORKSHEET

THOUGHT OF THE DAY 8 th period- place chairs on top of desks please! What is the difference between interval and ratio schedules? Explain. Write your name and ALWAYS explain your answer.

Test Go over worksheet Learning Station Activity AGENDA/ANNOUNCEMENTS HW/ Coming up: A Peaceful Thanksgiving Dinner due Friday, December 4 th ! Learning Unit Test- Friday, December 4 th Study guide, graphic organizer (for extra credit), flashcards due Friday, December 4 th ! Goal(s): To understand concepts about learning. Thanks guys for being honest about your test reflections

LET’S GO OVER YOUR WORKSHEET ON THE PARTIAL SCHEDULES OF REINFORCEMENT!

Write the following slide down!

Fixed (same) Variable (changing) Ratio (action) Every so many; a set number After an unpredictable number; a changing number Interval (time) Every so often; a fixed amount of time Unpredictably often; a changing amount of time SCHEDULES OF REINFORCEMENT

WHEN SHOULD REWARDS/PUNISHMENTS BE GIVEN?

 Follow the directions at each stage.  Once you are done with a stage, move on to another stage.  Does not have to be in a specific order, as long as you hit all! LEARNING STATION ACTIVITY

Schedules of Reinforcement Directions: Read each of the following statements presented and determine which partial schedule of reinforcement is explained (fixed interval, fixed ratio, variable interval, variable ratio).

A.Fixed Ratio B.Variable Ratio C.Fixed Interval D.Variable Interval 1.Buying scratch-off lottery tickets and sometimes winning. 2.A hotel maid may take a 15-minute break after cleaning 10 rooms. 3.Receiving an allowance every Sunday. 4.Checking the front porch for a newspaper when the deliverer is extremely unpredictable. 5.Checking the oven to see if chocolate chip cookies are done, when baking time is known. FR VR FI VI FI Schedules of Reinforcement

A.Fixed Ratio B.Variable Ratio C.Fixed Interval D.Variable Interval 6.A blueberry picker receives $1 after filling three pint boxes. 7.A charitable organization makes an average of 10 phone calls for every donation it receives. 8.Repeatedly calling a garage mechanic to see if your car is fixed yet. 9.A student’s final grade improves one level for every three book reviews submitted. 10.A professional baseball player gets a hit approximately every third time at bat VR FR VR VI FR Schedules of Reinforcement
