Pearl River Powerpoint 11+

This is China.

This is the Pearl River in China.

The Pearl River Delta

Farmers have been growing vegetables in Huang Wen Yuan Cun village on the banks of the delta for hundreds of years.

What is Ms Ho doing?

Ms Ho says she remembers when there were lots of fish in the river and she collected clean water for irrigation. Now she says it’s black, acrid-smelling water.

Why do you think she still uses it?

Mr Lee has been fishing the Pearl River for many years. He says that many years ago people could drink the river water but now it’s so polluted even the fish taste of soap.

A factory owned by a company called Kingboard processes chemicals next to the village and everyone’s farms.

The factory lets toxic wastewater into the river from pipes like this.

Why is the Greenpeace worker wearing a mask?

Now, local people think the farmers’ vegetables are poisoned. The farmers have a hard time selling them. But they still have to eat what they grow, even though it could make them ill.

How do you think the factory might have changed their lives?
