A.P. Psychology Ms. P

Welcome! So…..what’s A.P. Psychology all about? I’m sure you have heard a BUNCH of great things, right? First, a little about me!

Ms. P. Have taught 8 years 5 th year teaching A.P. Psychology 3 rd year- HLR Swimming coach- DDE Track coach- HLR

Let’s be real….. Why are you are here? – Field trips? Sure. – Interesting material? Possibly. – The cool teacher? Nah. – OR……… – To prepare for the AP Psychology test! Bingo!

A.P. Psychology Scores (HLR) – 54 took exam 9 “5’s”- 18 “4’s” -Most 4’s 11 “3’s” (ok) 9 “2’s”  (meh) 7 “1’s”-Least 1’s

Why the 4’s and 5’s? Statistically 2 nd “easiest” exam. – Just behind what? Basic vocabulary. Example: What is the mode? (#50) Teach what’s on exam! – Yup 5 years teaching! – Consistency! I even “predicted” one of the FRQ’s!

A.P. Psychology: Let’s be real for a moment…. So….how does it work? College credit: – 3, 4, or 5 – Public schools- “3” – High score counts as college credit – You don’t have to pay to take class! – 40+ hours of GE’s! – Which saves you BUNDLE – 4-year: $2,000-$3,000* – 2-year: $700-$1,200*

AP Psychology Exam (Logistics) 100 multiple choice – (70 minutes) (2/3) – From ALL units FRQ – Two FRQ’s – (50 minutes) (1/3) – Now…..how you can obtain a “4” or a “5” on the exam?

History & Evolution – (2%-4%) “Psychology has a SHORT history and a LONG past” “From speculation to science”

Psychology’s “big debate” Nature vs. nurture? Plato- “inherited” Aristotle- “external” Darwin’s “natural selection” “Survival of the fittest”

Nature vs. Nurture Are gender differences biologically predisposed or socially constructed? – Boys are “blue” and girls are “pink” Is a child’s grammar mostly innate or formed by experience? – Chomsky? Skinner? Is depression a disorder of the brain or a disorder of thought? How are humans “alike” and “different?”

Agenda: 08/26 Vocabulary (#1-#12) due tomorrow* Vocabulary quiz tomorrow! No notes! Cross off “waves of psychology” (4) Cross off “common dilemmas” (6) Perspectives overview! Begin project- “celebrity” Exam on Monday! Interactive notebook due Monday!

Last wave is made up of about 7 different perspectives. In other words, psychologists today, pick and choose from about 7 schools of thought to help you with your problems. Thus we have: THE SEVEN SCHOOLS OF PSYCHOLOGY

Biological Perspective All of your feelings and behaviors have an organic root. Please explain Justin Bieber’s “erratic” behavior using the biological approach Justin Bieber’s behavior is erratic, unstable, and borders on criminal. Use the biological approach to explain why!

Evolutionary Perspective Passing down traits for survival. How is Justin Bieber’s current behavior connected to “natural selection? Are these traits that would ensure survival?

Psychoanalytic Perspective Focuses on the unconscious mind. How is Justin Bieber’s behavior somehow connected to his unconscious mind ? Do you think something occurred in Justin’s life that he has repressed? Could there be a connection between his lack of a father figure and his behavior? Is his “repression” of being a typical pre- teen now coming about?

Behavioral Perspective If we know that the behavioral approach is all about “observation,” is Justin imitating other pop stars? How might Usher be somehow involved?

Cognitive Perspective How could Justin’s thinking and interpretation about the entertainment industry shape his behavior? It’s all about the way in which we encode our world!

Social-Cultural Perspective How has the entertainment culture shaped Justin’s life ? Does your culture or your society place value on individual or the group?

Humanist Perspective Peaked in the late 1960’s and 1970’s It focuses on spirituality and free will. What is Justin’s “unique potential or purpose in life?” Happiness is defined by the distance between our “self- concept” and “ideal self”.

Agenda: 08/28 Vocab part #2 check! Unit #1 Exam is Monday Interactive notebook due Monday Outrageous celebrity projects- due Monday Project time (15 minutes) BUMP Review Game

Interactive Notebook Cross off “Exit slip” (7) Cross off “FRQ prep” (10) Cross off “Speed dating” (12) Cross off “Psychological careers” (8)

Unit Journal (R) Goes on right side and is hand written Discuss what “worked” this unit and what didn’t Any issues? Any problems? Need additional help? Your dialogue to me! At least ½ page in length! Don’t slack on this!
