Analysis of sports performance Lesson 1

Aims and objectives Today, we shall be: –Starting the last unit you will ever study with me! –Looking at the elements of the unit –Constructing a performance/player profile for a chosen sport. Specifically, you should: –Be able to describe the chosen components of a performance profile for a selected sport. –Describe the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may affect performance within a sport

The unit Three assignments. A variety of areas, including ones that we have touched upon before. –Performance profiling –Analysing performance at different levels –Providing feedback Five P criteria, three M criteria, two D criteria.

To begin with Complete the crossword

Next… Now, complete the worksheet on the 5 areas that comprise a performance profile.

Assessing each others work Get into groups by sport: –All footballers together –All rugby players together –All netball and basketball players together –All individual sport players together –All non-players together Next, compare your answers, with respect to the following: –Do you agree on the components? If there are disagreements, why are there disagreements? –Do you have congruence (agreement) on why those chosen components are important in your sport If not, why not? Finally, look at the various components and ascribe them a rank score so that, as a sporting group, you have an ordered list from most to least important.

Checking of learning Have you now achieved aim 1: –Be able to describe the chosen components of a performance profile for a selected sport.

Taking aim 1 further You can describe, now you need to explain and analyse why those components are important in your chosen sport. –To do this, you need to conduct some research that backs up why those components are important. You have thirty minutes to find at least one source for two of the elements for each of the five component areas we are looking at. –Once you have your research, ensure that you have either saved or printed it out, we will be returning to it in another lesson.

Intrinsic and extrinsic factors The factors that may affect someone’s performance in a sport can be broken down into intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

Intrinsic factors These are factors within the performance and are not directly affected by others. They include: –Health –Diet –Previous training –Ability –Motivation –Confidence Your task: –For each of these six factors, provide a description on how they affect performance in an activity You have ten minutes

Extrinsic factors These are factors outside of an individual and involve the interaction of others, both players and non-players. Extrinsic factors include: –Temperature –Time of day –Group cohesion –Group dynamics Your task, like intrinsic factors, describe how each of these factors may affect a player’s performance in their chosen sport. –You have ten minutes

Checking of learning Have you now achieved aim 2: –Describe the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may affect performance within a sport

Conclusion Any questions on today’s lesson? From the specification: –P1: describe the performance profile of a selected sporting activity –P2: describe five factors that may influence the performance of an athlete Keep hold of today’s work!
