Genetically Modified Organisms GROUP 4: BRANDON EVANS, RACHELLE FAIRCHILD, RYAN GAINES, DEATON HILDABRAND, FREDERICK RUPP

Quiz  1. Name the flower mentioned that has been genetically modified to be a different color.  2. How did they genetically modify cats and pigs to track different diseases?  3. What is a super weed?  4. Name the herbicide most commonly used.  5. What is the name of the company most associated with research in the genetically modified field? (Hint: One of the members in the debate was from this company.)

History

What is a GMO?  Involves genetic engineering to produce desired traits in plants and animals  The most common application of GMO crops are the make them more resistant to disease and make them last longer.  Do not have to be labeled as a genetically modified crop  GMOs are used in a variety of scientific and practical applications  Has lead to mutated weed species

What are the long term effects of GMO research for society? Pro  Higher production  Cheaper for farmers and consumers  Extended seasons  Improve both animal and human life through research  Sustain exponential population growth Con  Unknown long term effects  Super weeds  Playing God  Where should the line be drawn?  Eliminate genetic diversity  Can genes be patented?

Discussion  Do people have the right to know whether they are eating a GMO product? (Right)  Are genetic sequences intellectual property?(Social Contract)  Do the benefits now outweigh the potential unknown consequences of GMOs? (Utilitarianism)

Thank you
