 Don’t let cold weather keep you indoors and away from your exercise program  The following precautions will keep you warm and fit during the cold seasons: Dress in layers Protect your extremities Drink fluids/ Avoid alcohol Cover your mouth Keep the wind at your back

 Dress in several thin layers that can easily be added or removed to account for changes in body temperature  The goal of layering is to minimize sweating  Do not make cotton your first layer, it will absorb sweat and be cold against the skin

 When in cold environments our bodies begin to redirect blood flow to our core. This leaves our extremities vulnerable to frostbite  Wear a hat or earmuffs to protect your ears  Wear gloves to protect your hands  Wear an extra pair of socks or thermal socks to protect your toes

 A common mistake when exercising in the cold is to not drink fluids like you would if it were warm  Dehydration affects your body’s ability to regulate body heat and increases the risk of frostbite Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages because they can also cause dehydration

 Cover your mouth with a scarf or ski mask to aid in warming and humidifying cold air  Breathing cold air can cause angina and a burning sensation in the throat  If you have any respiratory concerns consult a doctor to see if it’s safe for you

 When possible exercise with the wind to your back during the warmest part of the day, especially if sweating

 The tips provided will help keep you warm in cold weather; however there are other alternatives that will keep you even warmer  Begin an exercise regimen at your local gym  Try a workout video at home  Mall walking  Start an active indoor hobby i.e. Wii Fit, shuffleboard
