Lisbon Induction Days, 3 & 4 September 2012 “Crossways in Cultural Narratives”

Department of Modern Languages, Cultures and Literature was created in 2004, as the outcome of the merger of three former departments: Department of German Studies, Department of Anglo-Portuguese Studies and Department of Romance Studies. These departments already had a long history in teaching and researching within FCSH.

Department of Portuguese Studies Founded at the same time as FCSH. The Department of Portuguese Studies started in the 80’s aiming at interdisciplinar work. The Department looked beyond its first innovative BA in Portuguese Studies, promoting specialised teaching and research of the Portuguese language, literature and culture.

- MA in Languages, Literatures and Cultures (Department of Modern Languages, Cultures and Literature) – Prof. Doutora Teresa Botelho - MA in Portuguese Studies (Department of Portuguese Studies ) – Prof. Doutora Teresa Araújo Both MA courses offer theoretical seminars (mandatory ECTS): Theories of Representation – 1st semestre; Portuguese & Brazilian Literature - 2nd semester; Oralities & Traditions - 3rd semester; Intertextuality – 4th semestre.

Objectives: to consolidate theoretical reflection and acquired knowledge in previous academic venues in the scientific field of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. To develop theoretical and methodological competencies within scientific research in the area of literature and culture in its relation with other cultures. More specifically: -to define and problematise pertinent objects of study; to select and to collect pertinent information of bibliographical, documental and ethnographic nature; - to organise and critically process, interpret and analyse information.

Free options at FCSH < en/copy_of_MasterandPostgraduateprogrammesleaflet pdf The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH) provides an unusual variety of academic programmes, bringing together courses in the area of Humanities (Philosophy, Languages and Literatures, History, etc) with courses within the scope of Social Sciences (Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Sciences). All the academic programmes are adapted to the Bologna system and to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

Teaching and researching Although most courses are taught in Portuguese, there are specific programmes taught in English and most of the Faculty members are fluent in other languages, such as English, French and Spanish. Soon there will be more academic programmes provided in English, particularly regarding PhD programmes. Teaching activities are supported by research conducted in the 25 FCSH Research Units and institutes, 16 of which achieved high classifications from international panels of experts. In these Research Units, the student may participate in research activities or develop the full research process of his / her master’s dissertation (or PhD thesis).

Optional internship at União de Mulheres Alternativa e Resposta (UMAR) Centro de Documentação e Arquivo Feminista Elina de Guimarães The Centre is experienced in MA internships.
