We use the Passive when we want to emphasize the action rather than the “doer” of the action. e.g. My bike was stolen. A mistake was made. A car is sold.

Active: The ball hit Janet. Passive: Janet was hit / Janet was hit by the ball. Active: The ball hit Janet. Passive: Janet was hit / Janet was hit by the ball. Active: He wrote a letter. Passive: The letter was written by him. Active: The mailman carried the mail. Passive: The mail was carried by the mailman.

We form the Passive Voice with the help of the verb “to be” (in the tense required) + 3 rd form of the verb. The object of an Active sentence becomes the subject of the Passive sentence. Active: They solved the problem quickly. Passive: The problem was solved quickly.
