Elemental Elements By: Lucas, Jamie, Carolina and Maia. Chlorine

We contacted Aquatic Centre and asked one of the supervisors about chlorine and how they use it.

How Much Chlorine Do They Use Per Pool? The average chlorine level per pool is 1.5 ppm (parts per million) each pool.

Where Do They Get The Chlorine From? The aquatic centre in Coquitlam gets there chlorine from Brenntag Canada. Brenntag Canada is located in Langley.

Can It Be Dangerous? One type of Chlorine is used in drinking water and swimming pools to kill harmful bacteria. Another type of chlorine is the "household" chlorine which is bleach and that is a very dangerous chemical that can kill.

What Is In Chlorine? Chlorine has Sodium carbonate also known as soda ash. Soda ash is for helps to maintain the water and also to increase the pH (numeric scale that specifies alkalinity). Calcium chloride maintains the hardness, sodium bicarbonate is for maintaining the alkalinity.

What Does Chlorine Do? Chlorine is for killing harmful bacteria in pools.

Does It Have To Be Changed? The chlorine is constantly feeding itself to maintain the proper level the pool needs everyday.
