A presentation on Solar 6tem Hybrid Oven “Utilizing the power of light to bring change to our generation”

INTRODUCTION Cooking by means of solar energy started in the ‘70s in response to the growing shortage of firewood resulting from chronic deforestation. A solar cooker needs no wood just sun! There are several types of solar cooker which include: box, panel, parabolic etc.

Aims and Objectives The aim of this project is to design and fabricate a simple and efficient solar 6tem Hybrid oven. This work hopes to achieve the following objectives:  To produce a relative cheap solar 6tem Hybrid oven that can attain a temperature of at least C within the oven.  To evaluate the performance of the oven.  To enlighten people about solar 6tem Hybrid ovens, and how to use it.

Significance of Solar 6tem Hybrid Oven:  Foods cook unattended while you do other things.  Convenient, portable and easy to clean.  Production of an environmentally friendly oven.  Solar 6tem Hybrid oven help air quality.

Limitation: It has no means of storing the excess solar energy collected.

LITERATURE REVIEW Factors Affecting Solar Energy Availability  Geographical location  Site of location of collector  Collector orientation  Time of day  Time of the year  Atmospheric condition

Solar Cookers  Concentrating sunlight:  Converting light to heat:  Trapping heat:  Greenhouse effect: Types of Solar Cookers  Panel Solar Cookers  Parabolic Cookers  Solar Box Cookers

Design Consideration Criteria for evaluating the performance of the solar 6tem Hybrid oven: 1. The time taken by the oven to boil 1 litre of water. 2. The highest temperature the oven can attain, when heated empty and the time taken to attain such temperature. 3. The rate of energy absorbed by the black pot in the oven.

Heat Transfer Principles of Solar 6tem Hybrid Oven 1)Conduction 2)Convection 3)Radiation

MATERIAL SELECTION OUTER BOX = Cardboard (wood, plastic or metal can be used) INNER BOX = Cardboard (wood, plastic or metal can be used) GLUE = Top Bond Gum DARK COOKING POT = Thin metal Black Pot TRANSPARENT HEAT TRAP = Glass (concave lens, Fresnel lens can also be used) REFLECTIVE SURFACES = Aluminium Foil (mirrors, aluminium spray paint can be used too) INSULATION = Saw Dust (Fibre glass can also be used) ELECTRICAL HEATING ELEMENT 220V, W

Methodology Plate 4.1: Pictorial view of the inner and outer box of the solar 6tem hybrid oven. Plate 4.1 Pictorial view of the inner and outer box of the solar box cooker Plate 4.2: Pictorial view of the lid of the cooker under construction

Plate 4.3: shows the cooker partially completed with the absorber pot placed in it. Plate 4.4: Shows the cooker undergoing a test.

Conclusion  It is our responsibility to protect our environment and the people who live in it. By utilizing solar energy for our domestic and industrial activities we are saving lives and preserving our environment from pollution.  Solar 6tem Hybrid Oven intends to tackle air pollution, create jobs, ease the stress of gathering cooking fuels, subsidize the cost of cooking fuels, as well as preserve agricultural produce, sterilize most medical equipment for effective health service delivery; for Nigerians and Africa as a whole.

RECOMMENDATION 1. The size of the boxes used for the fabrication of the cooker should be larger. 2. Mirrors should be used as the reflectors of the cooker. 3. To increase the performance of the cooker more reflectors should be used to trap more ray on the glazing. 4. Additional devices such as: timer, temperature regulator and alarm etc. are required. 5. Rollers for easy movement and adjustment of the oven are also needed. 6. Handles should also be fabricated for easy carrying of the oven.
