In 1625, King Charles I marries a French Catholic princess called Henrietta Maria In April 1640 parliament refuses to grant Charles money to finance his military campaigns In 1628, Parliament voted to give Charles money for one year only. All previous kings and queens had been granted money for life In November 1640 Charles’s Army is defeated in Scotland. The King is desperate for more money. Parliament makes six demands to Charles before they will grant him money. In 1629 Charles shuts down parliament and did not allow them to meet again for 11 years In January 1642 Charles storms into parliament and tries to arrest 5 MP’s In the 1630’s Charles and his archbishop began to make churches look more beautiful, people thought they were starting to look Catholic again In February 1642 parliament votes to throw Charles’s Bishops out of the House of Lords In 1634, Charles started to collect a tax called ‘Ship Money’ (usually only taken in times of war) He used it because he knew parliament would not grant him more money In March 1642 Parliament takes control of the Army without the King’s permission In 1637 Charles introduces a new prayer book, his religious changes worry people in Scotland who reject the new ‘Catholic’ style book.
