INTRODUCTION TO: WORD PROCESSING The use of a computer and software to easily produce documents.

MICROSOFT OFFICE zWORD (word processing application) zEXCEL (spreadsheet) zACCESS (database) zPowerPoint (presentation software)

WORD PROCESSING TERMS zTEXT--another term for words zDOCUMENT—a file that contains text or other objects; letter, memo, report (provides proof) zWORD WRAP—text that doesn’t fit at the end of a line is automatically wrapped to the next line z FORMATTING—making changes to a document’s appearance z EDITING—making changes to a document by inserting deleting, etc. z SELECTING—to single out an object or text in order to work with it

TERMS CONTINUED... zICONS—small pictures representing programs or other items zINSERTION POINT--a vertical blinking line that shows your current position in a document.

zSPELL CHECKERS— Editing tool that reviews the spelling in a file. Suggests replacements. zGRAMMAR CHECKERS— Editing tool that reviews the grammar used in a file. Highlights possible errors, & suggests one or more replacements. z THESAURUS--A language tool that provides definitions and a list of synonyms (similar meaning) for a selected word.

FILES zOPENING A FILE-- bringing back a saved file to work with zCREATING A NEW FILE--starting a brand new document z.DOCX--The extension name that identifies your file as a word processing file z LENGTH OF A FILE NAME--limited to 255 characters when naming a file
