Supporting Struggling Learners: Sharing Strategies for Support for CMP students; Tier 2 Interventions Connected Mathematics Project: Users Conference February 19, 2016 Mary Bouck—Michigan State University Jim Alspaugh—Ionia Middle School Valerie Mills---Oakland Schools

Purpose and Agenda Participant and facilitator sharing of information on programs/projects for supporting struggling students in CMP and Tier II Interventions with CMP. Math Lab Project—for supporting struggling students in math (and CMP)—Ionia Middle School --design --teacher’s role and planning --student benefits from project Discussion on ideas for how CMP office and users of CMP could work together on supporting struggling students.

Supporting Struggling Learners Every school, and specifically every middle school, has students that are struggling with mathematics. This session is being offered to provide a forum for a conversation on what teachers, schools, and districts are doing to support these students by sharing strategies, ideas, and programs that have been proven or are showing positive affects on student learning of mathematics.

RTI: 3 Tiered Pyramid of Interventions Tier 1: High quality daily instruction, good teaching and good materials. Powerful enough to enable 80–90 percent of students to be successful. Tier 2: Intervention—moderate intensity, supplement to Tier 1 and are provided to small groups of students. 5% to 10% of students may need assistance at this level. Tier 3: Intense interventions provided, supplement to Tier 1, for groups of 1-3 students. 1% to 5% of students generally need assistance at this level.

Strategies and/or Programs of Support Name Position District Strategy and/or program that has been proven or is showing evidence of positive impact on supporting struggling students in mathematics. --quick description --years strategy/program has been operating --evidence of success and why it is working

Student Support: Math Lab

Ionia Middle School Math Lab Project: Extended math learning time—Students take 2 math classes per day—Regular CMP math class + Math Lab class CMP class graded, Math Lab—pass/fail Students have the same teacher for both classes There is no homework in Math Lab Focus of class time—”pre-teaching”, working on mathematics needed to participate in the next lesson in regular CMP class (pre-requisite skills and concepts ). This approach gives students “think time” needed to enter into and benefit from the challenging heterogeneous learning environment of the “regular” classroom. DO NOT—work on homework from regular CMP class Small class size for Math Lab—less than 20 and held 1 st or last period of day.

“Typical Day” in Math Lab 5 minutes: Review what we learned the previous day and tie it into what we will be learning 10 minutes: Pre-teach concepts that will help them be successful in the math class 20 minutes: Work with a partner on the concepts as I walk around and lend support minutes: Discuss what they learned and how it ties into the lesson in math class minutes :Go over questions or concerns on homework/previous work in the unit

Placement into Math Lab Teacher recommendation from previous year Scores on CMP tests Students that are currently struggling can be moved in by current teacher Standardized tests

Benefits seen to date Increased participation by Math Lab students in regular CMP class Increased attendance in school by Math Lab students (compared to previous years) Increase in positive disposition towards math from students in Math Lab. Increase in grades by Math Lab student in CMP class (as compared to year before). Previous year: most were barely passing or not passing math class. Now 100% are passing and ____carry a C or better. Parents appreciate the support their student receives.

Draw Backs / Issues Students lose an elective class Amount of planning time for class Lessons and lesson guides to help the teacher --tasks/activities (beyond what it in CMP) --identifications of topics that are of greater importance to a students’ further study of math --research and strategies for teaching common topics that have been shown to be more difficult for students but underlying understandings for a unit

Next Steps Discussion: Ideas for how CMP office and/or users of CMP could work together on supporting struggling students.
