 Louisiana Territory - Napoleon decides to sell the territory - needs the money to fight the British - rebels in the Caribbean

 Louisiana Purchase (1803) - $15 million - territory from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark explored the new territory

 Entering the Reexport Trade 1. Why did Americans participate in this ‘reexport’ trade? 2. How did the trade work (explain diagram) 3. What benefits did Americans receive from this trade? 4. Why did the British hate this trade?

 Impressment - taking American sailors from their ships and forcing them to serve in the British navy  Jefferson Asks for an Embargo - How did the embargo impact America’s economy?

The War of 1812

 Replacing the Embargo - Nonintercourse Act- United States would resume trade with whichever country (Britain, France) lifted their restrictions on American shipping.  Battling Native Americans - On western front, Native Americans tried to preserve their culture and unite Indian nations in armed resistance against American expansion.  War Hawks Demand War - A group of young politicians push for war against Britain to restore national honor

 Invasion of Canada Fails - United States underestimates British and Indian forces  Northwest Territory - British Indian allies are defeated  British Invade (1814) - After the British defeat French dictator Napoleon, thousands of troops are sent to fight in North America

 Effects of the War -Treaty of Ghent - a peace treaty that restored prewar boundaries -Federalist Party Ends -The Nation Continues to Grow - settlement expands into the West and South
