A. I. F. Pereira Guess I'll have more freedom... Older people can annoy me... It will be harder to be a good student... I will meet more people…. The school is so big that I think I'm going to lose … I will learn more... School transition from youth perspective Transition to a new School

The school transition is a time of: * disturbance because the youngster must make several adaptation demands; * but it is also a period of opportunities and challenges that managed to successfully promote a sense of competence. Transition to a new School

A. I. F. Pereira 3 stress domains in the transition of schools Academic Social Teachers / school Transition to a new School

Academic Stress Transition to a new School

Preventing academic stress * Helping your child become more independent in the organization of different materials for different subjects. * Helping your child become more independent in the study:  Looking to establish a study schedule;  Finding a suitable location and free from distraction  Helping to establish learning objectives and ensure its implementation;  Caution!!! You should not replace the child in homework. Transition to a new School

Preventing academic stress (cont.) Help plan and organize the study for evaluations: Search with the class director information about the youth developments and difficulties and how to help him progress.  Encourage the development of a calendar with all tests of the trimester  Plan ahead for the study tests  Monitor results of evaluations  Strengthen developments and jointly face the difficulties with son Transition to a new School

Social Stress Transition to a new School

PREVENTING SOCIAL STRESS Help your child to maintain friendly ties with former colleagues, facilitating contact, for example, helping to organize activities together over the weekend. Encourage the child to establish new relationships, encouraging him to engage in group activities at school or providing some socialization with colleagues at home. Be patient with concerns about physical appearance, encouraging him to enhance other young features. Transition to a new School

Teachers/ School Stress Transition to a new School

PREVENTING STRESS RELATED TO ADAPTATION TO NEW TEACHERS AND NEW RULES Help the child to better understand the new school and its regulations (for example, by reading the internal rules,...). Have a respectful attitude towards school and their professionals, addressing the difficulties that arise in a constructive manner; Communicate with the class director individually, at least once per trimester, and always share the concerns / issues they consider relevant with him. Transition to a new School

IN A GENERALLY WAY COMMUNICATE AND SUPPORT... Talk with the child about what is happening at school, while respecting their need for privacy. Being attentive to the appearance of some manifestations of anxiety (e.g., headaches, stomachaches, nausea) that are more persistent or disruptive. Being aware to the appearance of signs that may indicate disengagement or disconnection from school life. Transition to a new School
