DGL (AUST) Pty Ltd What is a Material Safety Data Sheet An MSDS is a document containing important information about a hazardous chemical (which may be hazardous substance and/or dangerous goods) and must state: a hazardous substance's product name the chemical and generic name of certain ingredients the chemical and physical properties of the hazardous substance health hazard information precautions for safe use and handling the manufacturer's or importer's name, Australian address and telephone number. The MSDS provides employers, self-employed persons, workers and other health and safety representatives with the necessary information to safely manage the risk from hazardous substance exposure. It is important that everyone in the workplace knows how to read and interpret a MSDS. Note 1 Note 1 – National Code of Practice for the Material Safety Data Sheets 2nd Edition page

DGL (AUST) Pty Ltd Who is responsible for providing an MSDS 1. A manufacturer or importer who prepares an MSDS must give a copy of it to each person to whom the manufacturer or importer supplies the substance when first supplying the substance to the person 2. A manufacturer or importer who amends an MSDS, must give a copy of the amended MSDS to each person to whom the manufacturer or importer supplies the substance when first supplying the substance to the person after preparing the amended MSDS. 3. A manufacturer or importer must on request, give a copy of a hazardous substance’s current MSDS to a) relevant person, worker or worker’s representative at a workplace where the substance is, or is to be, used; or b) the chief executive Failing to do so can result in government issued penalties (Note 2) It is good practice to ask for a current copy of the MSDS before the goods are first supplied, as this will enable you to begin planning for its safe use. Manufacturers, importers and suppliers have an obligation to provide you with a copy on request. If an MSDS is not made available, you should ask the manufacturer, importer or supplier whether the goods have been determined to be stated dangerous goods according to the regulation. If the supplier informs you that the goods do not belong to these categories, it is advisable to obtain written confirmation. If you are not satisfied with the MSDS provided, raise your concerns with the manufacturer, importer or supplier. The same dangerous goods may also be available from a manufacturer, importer or supplier who does provide an adequate MSDS. It also allows the MSDS prepared in accordance with the code of practice to be consistent with the information requirements of overseas systems. The following information should always be included in an MSDS This Checklist outlines the necessary information to prepare the 16 header MSDS format required under workplace hazardous substances and Dangerous Goods legislation. Core information is listed in regular fount, additional information is in italics.
