CHINESE INVENTIONS Mr. Nabors - RRMS Competency Goal 7 The learner will assess the connections between historical events and contemporary issues in Asia.

Ahead of Their Time  The Chinese were far ahead of the rest of the world.  They invented several important inventions that changed the world.  Europe did not use the same technology until hundreds of years later.

Chinese Inventions The Chinese are responsible for many important inventions and ideas. Paper Porcelain Woodblock Printing Gunpowder Movable Type Magnetic Compass Paper Money Silk

Magnetic Compass  The magnetic compass allowed sailors and merchants to travel great distances.  Sailors could easily find north

The Most Important, Paper  Paper gave the Chinese a cheap and easy way of keeping records and made printing possible.

 It began with carving texts and pictures on a flat woodblock, painted it with ink and covered with paper Woodblock Printing

Porcelain  Porcelain was used to create dishes, plates and vases.  Porcelain items were very valuable to European traders and merchants.

Moveable Type  Made printing much faster.  Movable type allowed the Chinese to write and restore hundreds of books.  Carved letters could be rearranged and reused to print a variety of messages

Silk  The Chinese learned how to farm the silk from the silk worm to create fine silk clothing.  The Silk Road is named after this fine fabric.

Gunpowder  Gunpowder was created for fireworks and signals. Later used for making bombs and rockets.  This invention drastically changed warfare

On your own….  On the LEFT Hand Side of your notebook, draw a picture of 4 different inventions and write a caption on why it was important. Use color and neatness counts.
