Queen Margaret University PMI Pilot Project Adopt an international student

Outline Rationale Planning Activities Outcomes

Why did we choose this project? For the international students To feel at home To develop a support network within the local community To gain an understanding about Scottish/British culture To enhance their employability with skills developed through volunteering

Why did we choose this project? For the local community To get to know (personally) one or more international students from QMU To feel more positively towards the university and, in particular, the student body To see how the university’s relocation has benefited the local community To gain an understanding about world cultures

How did we plan this project? Wider brainstorming Small project team Appointment of Project Officer Regular meetings Promotion of the project BUT left some control with the students themselves

What did we do? Activity One – Tea party Project Officer - made links with local groups for older people - organised logistics Students - schedule - entertainment Joint - follow up with groups

What did we do? Activity One – Tea party

What did we do? Activity Two – Cultural exchange Project Officer - made links with local schools - organised logistics Students - schedule - content Joint - follow up with groups

What did we do? Activity Two – Cultural exchange

What did we do? Activity Three – Community clear up Project Officer - made contact with local National Trust property - organised logistics Students - food Joint - follow up with groups

What did we do?

What did we learn? Positive feedback from students who felt the project enhanced a range of skills, their confidence more generally and enjoyed having contact with a range of groups that wouldn’t normally be accessible to them Positive feedback from community groups who would all like to be involved going forward

What would we do differently? How to engage with students who have no previous experience of volunteering Can we hand over more responsibility to the students Continuity (more UG involvement) Spend more on project officer
