NCBJ in figures  60 years of successful research  1100 employees, 70 professors, 120 PhDs, 3 sites, POLATOM and HITEC  High level of scientific excellence: Hirsch index ~122, 5th place in PL (including Universities and Academy), Category A  Cooperation with 40+ countries, e.g. CERN, DE: DESY & FAIR, FR: GANIL & CEA, JP: JPARC  Participation in LHC(CMS,LHC-b), Contribution to LINAC4, GBAR, XFEL, W-7X, ESS (Lund), JHR (Cadarache), NICA (Dubna) Kiev, 19 May 2016 Jacek Gajewski

International Cooperation  Goals: access to research infrastructures, cooperation with leading scientific centres, training of young researchers, regional coordination (V4, Baltic)  Participation in 38 int’l projects, currently 14 FP7&H2020 (2 coordinations, 3 EURATOM) =>.9MEUR/year  Conferences & workshops (~5/year)  Participation in governing and program bodies, platforms (17 expert positions, EURATOM PC)  Two special departments to support scientists: Project preparation, Project accounting&reports Kiev, 19 May 2016 Jacek Gajewski

Research & Int’l Cooperation Dept.  Special Unit of NCBJ – 4 persons who help to:  Find suitable call  Write proposal in required format (using internal and external consultants), in particlar: administrative parts, implementation, budgets  Validate proposal before submission  Perform starting formalities (contract negotiations, GA & CA’s, all paperwork)  Rate of success = 24% (EURATOM 3/9 = 33%) EURATOM activities in partnership with NCP-PL  Information activities Info-Days, Brokerage Days Kiev, 19 May 2016 Jacek Gajewski

Current regional projects - VINCO  VINCO (PL, CZ, HU, SK) + FR = Visegrad Initiative for Nuclear Cooperation = capacity building activities aiming at coordinating Gen IV reactor research, with specialization:  VUJE – reactor design and safety analyses,  UJV – cooling systems development,  MTA – fuel laboratory  NCBJ – structural material laboratory.  Close collaboration with CEA France, a European leader in nuclear technologies. Kiev, 19 May 2016 Jacek Gajewski

Current regional projects - BRILLIANT  BRILLIANT (LT, EE, LV, PL) + SE =  Barriers for NP development in Baltic region  R&D capacity building,  Cooperation on nuclear waste and fuel cycle,  NPP integration in small power systems,  NP influence on security of energy supply,  Macroeconomic impact of nuclear programs. In Particular NCBJ leads WP1, which will develop: A concept of „EUROBaltic Research Institute” Kiev, 19 May 2016 Jacek Gajewski

EUROBaltic Research Institute Kiev, 19 May 2016 Jacek Gajewski

EUROBaltic Research Institute: A challenging concept What seems possible within Brilliant project:  Align training and educational capabilities by opening existing courses for project participants  Define, implement and test access rules to existing infrastructures  Perform first experiments by mixed teams originating from several countries  Discuss and develop the concept of EUROBaltic Research Institute 8 National Centre for Nuclear Research

Projects for EURATOM 2016 (with NCBJ participation) NFRP 2 - V4F4 for Safety of gas cooled Reactors NFRP 4 – TWINS – Nuclear cogeneration of HTRs NFRP 4 - SEASON - Small, Efficient And Safe Operation of Nuclear Reactors NFRP 5 - GEMMA - GEnIV Materials Maturity, NFRP 10 – EURROFORCE - European Research Reactor Force NFRP 11 – FOREVER - high density fuel technologies: UMo or U 3 Si 2 NFRP 13 - M4F – Materials for Fusion Kiev, 19 May 2016 Jacek Gajewski

EURROFORCE project – goals  Increase awareness of decision makers and general public about the role of RR ○multipurpose research facilities (from basic to medical) ○hands-on training necessary to develop safety culture ○production of various radioisotopes and materials  Inventory of current fleet and its possibilities  Identify gaps and problems, find their sources  Roadmap to maintain and develop the RR fleet (for research, training and radioisotopes) National Centre for Nuclear Research, Poland

EURROFORCE - Major deliverables  Model for coordination of exploitation of RRs and of optimisation of their irradiation time  Comparison of current and forecasted needs and production capabilities of radioisotopes  Roadmap to maintain and develop RR fleet.  RR Blue Book (for experts) defining overall strategy for RR in Europe  Plan for coordination of activities of RR Networks and international organizations  For general public: Brochure and WWW site advertising applications of RR National Centre for Nuclear Research, Poland

Summary of the EURROFORCE project Cost and duration: 1 mln €, 3 years Consortium (Decided, Interested, Contacted):  RR networks: EAES/RROG, IGORR, BRRN/KTH, EERRI  All EU research reactors (AT/TRIGA-TUE, BE/BR-2, CZ/LVR15, CZ/CTU, FR/JHR, GR/GRR1, HU/BRR, IT/TRIGA RC-1, NL/HFR, NO/Halden, PL/MARIA, RO- TRIGA/Pitesti, SI/TRIGA Mark II, PT/PT-1, TK/TR-2, UA/WWR-M)  International organisations: IAEA, AIPES? National Centre for Nuclear Research, Poland Jacek Gajewski

Specific EURATOM PM issues  Both research and networking are more difficult due to high security and safety requirements, which differ from country to country  Different „safety cultures” among different nations -> tensions among partners  Limited number of industrial partners, especially SMEs -> communities are small  Research vs. Business balance (Mo-99 case)  Nuclear power is political and unstable issue + low public awareness -> dissemination and sustainability are sometimes difficult Kiev, 19 May 2016 Jacek Gajewski

Visit to Kiev INR NASU Discussion with Kharkov IPT NASU Kiev, 19 May 2016 Jacek Gajewski Thank You!
