LEADS

Objectives We will think about how to write a strong lead to start a personal narrative. I will experiment with different techniques for writing leads in my personal narrative.

The Hook! The lead, or opening sentences, of our personal narratives are very important. A strong lead can grab our readers’ attention and make them want to keep going, but a weak lead can make readers lose interest right away. Good writers have many ways to grab their readers’ interest.

“There was a bat in our house last summer.” Which Lead works better? Why? “Quick, hit the floor,” yelled dad. “Whatever you do, don’t look up!” my mother added in hysterics as I dropped to the floor and slid under my bed. The night my family discovered a bat in our house was truly terrifying.

Let’s look at some interesting Leads from popular novels and discuss why they grab the reader’s attention and make them want to keep going

Why is this an interesting lead? Dialogue

Why is this an interesting lead? Dialogue that Lists specific details.

Why is this a good lead? Inner Thoughts
