Lesson 3: Healthy Food Guidelines TURN IN MEAL LOG ON MY DESK

 Set of recommendations about smart eating and physical activity for all Americans.  Three key guidelines  Make smart choices from every food group  Find your balance between food and activity  Get the most nutrition out of your calories.

 Each colored band represents a different food group.  The bigger the width, the more food you need from that group  The steps on the pyramid remind you to be physically active every day.

 Focus on Fruits  Vary Your vegetables  Get your calcium rich foods  Make half your grains whole  Go Lean with protein  Limit certain foods.

 Grains  Vegetables  Fruits  Fats/Oils  Milk  Proteins

 High ratio of nutrients to calories  Carrot vs a bag of chips  Eat a small serving of potato chips with a lean nutritious turkey sandwich

 Students do better in school  Less Likely to be overweight  Raises your metabolism  Gives you energy MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY

 Watch portion sizes  Pay attention to how foods are prepared  Fried food will be high in FAT  Add vegetables and Fruit  Go Easy on Toppings  Don’t drink your calories
