NEWTEC: automatic investigation on seismic events with SAR interferometry 10/11/2009, Frascati (Rome) Speaker:Fabio Del Frate (GEO-K) 2

[ 3 / 27 ] NEWTEC Service Presentation  Earthquakes continue to occur on previously unrecognized faults  Radar interferometry has the potential to solve these problems gathering crucial data on earthquakes and the seismic cycle from some of the remotest areas of the planet.  Intrinsic ill-posedeness of the inversion problem. The retrieval procedures so far used by geologists and experts are long and subject to human interpretation  A novel technique (Tor Vergata University PhD program) proposes the synergic use of SAR interferometry and neural networks for analysing and classifying seismic events in a fully automatic and objective mode  NEWTEC vehicles this technique into an operative environment as SSE, making it available also for Earth scientists and geologists not confident with SAR inteferometry

[ 4 / 27 ] NEWTEC Potential Users NEWTEC will be available to:  Earth scientists and geologists already confident with SAR interferometry  Earth scientists and geologists NOT confident with SAR interferometry NEWTEC SS2 NEWTEC SS1 NEWTEC SS2 NEWTEC SS1  Other users NOT confident with SAR interferometry

[ 5 / 27 ] NEWTEC Complex SAR Master image Complex SAR Slave image Interferogram generation Neural Network Processor Length Width Dip Strike Depth Seismic parameters SS1 (charged, users that might not be interested in getting information on a seismic event but could simply request the generation of an interferogram) SS2 (not charged, for expert users) SS3 = Newtec (charged, service addressed to tectonics expert but no SAR expert users) Provided by the user Provided by the user in case of SS2 What NEWTEC does

[ 6 / 27 ] NEWTEC Service Specifications  Classification of the event  Localization of the event  Retrieval of the fault parameters characterizing the event SS1 Input SS1 Output  Interferogram  quality check on the accuracy estimated for the final product SS2 Input SS2 Output  Interferogram  ERS1/2 or Envisat ASAR ESA-CEOS image pairs (mandatory)  Area of interest (optional)  Request for image check (optional)

[ 7 / 27 ] NEWTEC SS1 WORKFLOW Complex SAR Master image Complex SAR Slave image Provided by the user Images Upload Images format check Interferogram generation RFQ output: Wrong uploading, message is sent to the user via mail Complexity evaluation for the elaboration Images format correct Classification of the process in: - Normal; - Complex; - Very Complex. user AOI definition (optional ) Quality check (optional) RFQ output RFQ confirm Output for the user (interferogram) available via ftp. Details needed for the download are sent to the user via mail

[ 8 / 27 ] NEWTEC Before using the service must be enabled as a “expert user”. One containing the list of publications of the user must be provided to the e- mail address written on the SSE interface of the service. That list should be ed only on the first access, in order to obtain certification to use the service Expert user Interferogram Provided by the user Interferogram Upload Neural Network Processor Length Width Dip Strike Depth Seismic parameters Output for the user (seismic parameter) available via ftp. Details needed for the download are sent to the user via mail SS2 WORKFLOW

[ 9 / 27 ] NEWTEC SS3 is the chained service composed by SS1 and SS2 Complex SAR Master image Complex SAR Slave image Provided by the user Images Upload Images format check Interferogram generation RFQ output: Wrong uploading, message is sent to the user via mail Complexity evaluation for the elaboration Images format correct Classification of the process in: - Normal; - Complex; - Very Complex. user AOI definition (optional ) Quality check (optional) RFQ output RFQ confirm Output for the user (seismic parameter and interferogram) available via ftp. Details needed for the download are sent to the user via mail Neural Network Processor Length Width Dip Strike Depth Seismic parameters BPEL SS3 WORKFLOW A workflow has to be generated with Oracle BPEL Workflow Manager and uploaded into the BPEL console of the portal

[ 10 / 27 ] NEWTEC –SS1: For the price determination three different complexity levels of the requested task are considered: medium, complex, very complex –SS2: not charged and for pre-registered users. The acceptance of the registration form depends on the proven capability of the user to provide suitable input data (list of publications is needed) –SS3: Is the chained service, for the price determination conditions of SS1 must be considered NEWTEC RFQ The service shall be able to answer to an SSE RFQ in compliance with SSE ICD

[ 11 / 27 ] NEWTEC Architectural Design Integration of the service into the SSE environment

[ 12 / 27 ] NEWTEC SS3: Chain of services The chain done using JDeveloper, version using the libraries of version BPEL utilities allow Service provider to check the Status of the chain COMPLETED

[ 13 / 27 ] NEWTEC USER INTERFACE Filename of SAR Images 1 and 2 Address Ftp Username Password AOI

[ 14 / 27 ] NEWTEC After the RFQ completion RQF status becomes COMPLETE… … and user receives an with the VOUCHER-ID in order to complete the Order request procedure USER INTERFACE

[ 21 / 27 ] NEWTEC SS2 Validation (with INGV) CASE 1 The Umbria-Marche earthquake, 1997, had two main shocks on September 26th at 00:33 and at 09:40 GMT (Greenwich Medium Time), Mw 5.7 and 6.0 respectively. The seismic fault causing the main events is characterized by a forward mechanism. CASE 2 On December 26 th, 2003, the historical city of Bam (“Unesco World Heritage”) has been hit by a strong earthquake, Mw 6.5. The seismogenic active fault has a strike slip mechanism. CASE 3 The Northridge earthquake, 1994, hit the urban area of Los Angeles with Mw 6.7. The seismogenic fault responsible for this earthquake is characterized by a reverse mechanism, or thrust. A large number of models dealing with different approaches is available in literature for each case study.
