Objectives  SWBAT define and explain persuasion.  SWBAT discuss and explore the top five philosophers.

Discussion Question  What is the difference between a debate and an argument?

Concentric Circles  What is the difference between a debate and an argument?  Individually, draw a picture OR write the difference between an argument or debate.  Once everyone in your group is done, combine you’re answers and write a group response.

What is philosophy?  Quite literally, the term "philosophy" means, "love of wisdom." In a broad sense, philosophy is an activity people undertake when they seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which they live, and their relationships to the world and to each other.

Continued…  As an academic discipline philosophy is much the same. Those who study philosophy are constantly engaged in asking, answering, and arguing for their answers to life’s most basic questions.  Who defines good and evil?  What is true love?  What happens after we die?

What makes you a philosopher?  A philosopher is not just a person who knows a great deal or loves to learn. Rather, the philosopher is one who engages actively in critical thought about big questions that have no obvious answers.

Do you consider yourself a philosopher? Why or why not?

Top 5 Greatest Philosophers in History  #5 Confucius  The most important single philosopher in Eastern history.  Confucius also devised his own, independent version of the Golden Rule, which had existed for at least a century in Greece before him. His phrasing was almost identical, but then furthered the idea: “What one does not wish for oneself, one ought not to do to anyone else; what one recognizes as desirable for oneself, one ought to be willing to grant to others.”

Top 5 Greatest Philosophers in History  #4 Rene Descartes  Descartes lived from 1596 to 1650, and today he is referred to as “the Father of Modern Philosophy.” He created analytical geometry, based on his now immortal Cartesian coordinate system, immortal in the sense that we are all taught it in school, and that it is still perfectly up- to-date in almost all branches of mathematics. Analytical geometry is the study of geometry using algebra and the Cartesian coordinate system. He discovered the laws of refraction and reflection. He also invented the superscript notation still used today to indicate the powers of exponents.

Top 5 Greatest Philosophers in History  #3 Paul of Tarsus  Jesus founded Christianity. But without Paul, the religion would have died in a few hundred years at best, or remained too insular to invite the entire world into its faith, as Jesus wanted.

Top 5 Greatest Philosophers in History  #2 Plato  Plato founded the Western world’s first school of higher education, the Academy of Athens. Plato argued that something must have created the Universe. Whatever it is, the Universe is its offspring, and we, living on Earth, our bodies and everything that we see and hear and touch around us, are less real than the creator of the Universe, and the Universe itself

Top 5 Greatest Philosophers in History  #1 Aristotle  Aristotle had something to say on just about every subject, whether abstract or concrete, and modern philosophy almost always bases every single principle, idea, notion or “discovery” on a teaching of Aristotle.

continued… Aristotle is the most notable product of the educational program devised by Plato. Aristotle wrote on an amazing range of subjects, from logic, philosophy, and ethics to physics, biology, psychology, politics, and rhetoric.

What is rhetoric? Rhetoric is the art of persuasion. The goal of persuasion is to change others’ point of view or to move others to take action.
