Summer Online Course Orientation Lyn Gualtieri Senior Instructor Environmental Science UCOR 3840 (Natural Hazards)

Oh…I did that last summer. Let me give you a few pointers. Dude…I’m taking an online class this summer.

The Basics Are you self-disciplined? Do you need reminders? This is not a “self-paced course”. There are deadlines. You will be engaged and engaging with your peers and professor. Most coursework is asynchronous, but some is synchronous.

The reality of time management for a 5 cr. class Course LengthTime spent in class/week Time spent outside of class/week Total time spent on class/week 11 weeks4 hours, 10 min.8 hours, 20 min.12.5 hours 8 weeks> 5 hours>10 hours>15 hours 4 weeks>10 hours>20 hours>30 hours For every one hour spent in class you should spend 2 hours outside of class preparing Yikes…that’s a lot of time.

Understand your course navigation In other words….do not rely on CANVAS to tell you when an assignment is due Is your course organized by Modules? How is a “week” defined in your course? Sun-Sat? Mon-Fri? When does the week end? When is your professor available to answer questions? M-F, 9-5? How do the course deadlines translate to your time zone? What are the weekly assignments? Do you need to post to a Discussion Board every week? By when? Do you need to respond to Discussion Board posts every week? By when? Are there bigger projects that will take a few weeks to complete? Rough drafts or outlines due ahead of time? Presentations? Group work?

Will you be on vacation at some point during your online course? Will you have a reliable internet connection while you are on vacation/camping/at a cabin? Plan Ahead! “I was on vacation and thought I would have a reliable internet connection, but didn’t” = Lame excuse

Lame Excuses Yeah. Do you really think the professors can tell?

Academic Integrity WHY DO IT?

1.Meet with student(s) 2.Meet with student(s) and department chair 3.Fill out violation report form 4.Make three copies of form and all supporting documents 5.Dean’s Office sends a certified letter to the student 6.Dean’s Office sends documents to the Office of the Provost 7.If multiple violations the student’s Dean is notified When a student violates the Academic Integrity Policy…...the faculty member is not very happy . …and then the student is not very happy .

Academic Integrity A “LOSE-LOSE” for everyone

No problem. Have a fun summer! Wow…thanks for all that info.
