STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Making Connections Across Disciplines Piia Pehap

Learning Goals Learning Goal: To make connections across math and science disciplines. Focusing on pedagogy that improves student learning and understanding. Success Criteria: Create a plan for science instruction that integrates the pedagogical changes involving student exploration.

Making Connections Mathematical PracticesScientific Practices and Skills 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Asking Questions 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively Using mathematical and computational thinking Analyzing and interpreting data 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Engaging in argument from evidence 4. Model with Mathematics Developing and using models 5. Use appropriate tools strategically Planning and carrying out investigations 6. Attend to precision Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information 7. Look for and make sense of structure Analyzing and interpreting data Construction explanations and designing solutions 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Lesson Structure Anticipatory set or opener to engage student schema before the exploration. Launch Students work to explore an investigation to answer a question or to find an explanation. Explore Students share their findings and the classroom draws conclusions. Discuss

What is the teacher doing? Sets the stage to spark curiosity. Establishes expectations. Launch Asks why? Looks for examples to share and how to scaffold the discuss. Explore Teacher directs sharing, encouraging students to question. Discuss

“Mathematics is to nature as Sherlock Holmes is to evidence. When presented with a cigar butt, the great fictional detective could deduce the age, profession, and financial state of it’s owner. His partner, Dr. Watson, who was not as sensitive to such matters, could only look on in baffled admiration, until the master revealed his chain of impeccable logic. When presented with the evidence of hexagonal snowflakes, mathematicians can deduce the atomic geometry of ice crystals. If you are a Watson, it is just as baffling a trick, but I want to show you what it is like if you are a Sherlock Holmes.” Ian Stewart From Nature’s Numbers: The Unreal Reality of Mathematics.

Looking back at our Learning Goals Learning Goal: To make connections across math and science disciplines. Focusing on pedagogy that improves student learning and understanding. Success Criteria: Create a plan for science instruction that integrates the pedagogical changes involving student exploration.
