Who Are We? Health and Human Service Perspective

Poverty in Our Community  21.8% of Grand Forks residents live in Poverty  Grand Forks has the highest Poverty Rate among the four major cities in ND (Grand Forks, Fargo, Bismarck & Minot)  12.7% of Polk County (MN) residents live in Poverty  U.S. Census: Poverty is: A single person making $12,071 or less and a family of 4 with a yearly income of $24,000 or less (US Census)  Many agencies use 200% of Federal Poverty Guideline to determine eligibility.  Individual making $23,000 a year or less  Family of 4 with annual income of $48,500 or less

Hunger in Our Community  Grand Forks County Social Services has the 2 nd largest number of participants on the SNAP program (food Shelf) in the state. 8,167 people were enrolled in 2014 (latest data available)  The Salvation Army’s food shelf served 5,253 unduplicated clients in 2015  East Grand Forks Food Shelf served a total of 2,968 unduplicated clients in 2015  The GF Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels program saw a 43% increase in meals delivered in the past year.  North Country Food Bank which supplies food to area food shelves and meal programs, saw a 29.5% increase in demand for food from 2014 to 2015.

Recent United Way Survey In a donor survey conducted by United Way in January 2016, the following were identified as the 10 most significant Social Issues facing our community: 1.Affordable Housing 2.Struggling Working Families 3.Cost and availability of child care 4.Substance Abuse 5.Mental Health 6.Poverty 7.Affordable Health Care 8. Child Abuse/neglect 9. Homelessness 10. Hunger

Child & School Demographics  21% of Children Ages 0-17 are living in Single-Parent families in GF  22.5% State wide  The school population is 75% Caucasian (down from 81% 3 years ago)  4% Asian  7% African American  5% Hispanic  6% Native American  33% of Children are living in Low Income Families  743 Children in 2014 were suspected victims of child abuse and neglect  Grand Forks Public Schools graduation rate is 87.8% (2015) Source: GF Public Schools Annual Report & Kids Count
