Primary School French model of education The language of instruction remains predominately French Primary school consists of five levels Children begin primary school at age six and seven (Cours préparatoire level)

Primary School 3 terms per school year Start in October and end in June Early years of Primary School: –French –Reading –Writing –Math Later the students learn history, geography, natural science, music, art, and physical education

Primary to Secondary After five years, students may take the CEPE –Evaluates writing, reading, math, history, geography, and applied sciences Students who pass then take the examen d'entrée en sixième

Primary -> Middle -> Secondary Education Several hundred elementary schools into about 140 middle schools About 140 middle schools into 45 high schools Only about 40% pass the baccalauréat exams

Issues in the System The quality of education has deteriorated Scores in math and French have declined for both second and fifth grades Drop outs remain high in primary school Gross enrollment rate is 90% -- Achievement rate is only 50%
