Using a Pattern Teen Living Objective Perform Basic Construction Procedures

Before Beginning to Sew…  Prepare the pattern  Prepare the fabric  Lay out & pin pattern pieces, & cut the fabric & cut the fabric  Mark the fabric

Step-by-Step Pattern Information  The pattern guide sheet

Seam Allowance  The seam allowance is the fabric between the line for cutting and the line for stitching  It isn’t marked if a pattern is multisized  Standard is 5/8”

Ease  Ease is extra room that allows for clothing to fit comfortably  It causes pattern pieces to be larger than size measurements

Adjustment Line  The adjustment line is a double line showing where the piece may be folded or cut  It helps you shorten, lengthen, or adjust for width

Preshrinking Fabric  If the label says the fabric will shrink more than 1%, the fabric should be washed prior to cutting out the pattern

Grain of Fabric  The direction in which the threads run

Selvage  The selvage is the finished edge of the fabric

Pattern Layout  A diagram that shows how to place the pattern pieces on the fabric

Laying Out Pattern Pieces  The first pieces laid out are the ones that must be placed along the fold line – with a bracket arrow on a straight edge

Directional Cutting  Cutting with the grain of the fabric

Cutting Line  The heavier outer line, along which you cut

Seam line/Stitching Line  The broken line inside the cutting line
