Carbon Cycle Ocean Systems

Scholarship Meeting Anyone interested in ESS scholarship Very brief Friday (24/05) lunchtime To arrange a suitable day/time for permanent meetings. Attend on friday to have your say!!!!!!

Brainstorm in your groups Everything you know about the carbon cycle. Hand in your brainstorm.

Carbon Cycle C_____ is vital to all l_____ things Carbon circulates around the planet in the ______ _____. It is stored in different parts of the cycle for different amounts of time and there are many processes involved in circulating the carbon.

Carbon Cycle The _____ is the biggest carbon store in the cycle. Carbon _____ in and out of the ocean every day but a lot of carbon is ______ there for thousands of years. The ocean is called a carbon ____ as it takes in more carbon than it releases.

Pumps There are two major pumps that cycle carbon around the ocean. The biological pump The solubility pump (physical pump)

The Biological Pump This is when living things move carbon from the atmosphere, into the ocean surface and then into the deep ocean and eventually into rocks.

Biological Pump

The Physical Pump The physical pump is also referred to as the solubility pump. Carbon dioxide is soluble in water. CO2 is more soluble in colder water, therefore it dissolves in the polar regions, is circulated to warmer regions where the CO2 is released back into the atmosphere.
