Technical Exercise 1 (50 pts.) INTD 3990: Alternative and Appropriate Technologies

Question 1 (10 pts.) Estimate the total amount of energy that you are responsible for consuming. Think clearly about whether you are doing a daily, monthly, or annual calculation. Report your answer in terms of an appropriate physical unit. It is recommended to create a spreadsheet or other table to show individual items, and then to add the total.

Question 2 (6 pts.) What is the average power that corresponds to your answer in Question 1? What might be the peak level of power that you require for certain “intensive” activities? How to the average and peak power compare?

Question 3 (10 pts.) Calculate and/or lookup the equivalent amount of energy used per person (“per capita”) in countries such as the US or Puerto Rico. Again, be clear as to the corresponding time frame (per day, per year, etc.). Provide citations for data that you collect and your main keyword searches. How does your answer to Question 1 compare with the per capita statistic? Can you explain the difference, if significant?

Question 4 (10 pts.) Lookup and/or calculate the amount of power required for the human body to supply to perform activities such as (pick two or three): Walking or Running Cycling or Skateboarding Swimming Thinking or Reading Any other that you can think of Provide citations for data that you collect and your main keyword searches.

Question 5 (4 pts.) Based on your answers to Question 1 and Question 4, estimate the percentage of your energy usage that your body could reasonably supply.

Question 6 (10 pts.) Write a brief reflection on this exercise: What did you learn or newly realize? Was there anything that surprised you? Does anything you learned in this exercise motivate you to change anything (or at least help you identify something that you would like to change)?
