Transport Systems in Plants Plant stems have tubes running through them to transport materials. There are two types of tubes: xylem vessels and phloem vessels. They are arranged in vascular bundles.

Xylem Vessels Xylem vessels carry water and minerals from the soil (where they are absorbed by root cells) up to the leaves and the rest of the plant. Xylem vessels are made of dead cells stacked to make long empty tubes. The walls of the tubes are just the cellulose cell walls, reinforced with lignin. Wood is essentially xylem. Phloem Vessels Phloem vessels carry the sugar sucrose and amino acids from leaves (where they are made by photosynthesis) to other parts of the plant. Phloem vessels are made of living cells stacked to make long tubes. The cells have holes in their end walls to allow substances to move through.

Transport Systems in Plants Together, the xylem and phloem vessels form a kind of circulatory system. Water is pulled up the xylem vessels and pushed down the phloem vessels.

Transport Systems in Plants Copy and fill in the gaps Plants have two types of transport tissues (vascular tissue) which carry materials around the plant. Xylem tissue is made up of the cellulose cell walls of dead cells. It transports water and mineral ions up from the roots to the rest of the plant. Phloem tissue is made of living cells. It transports sucrose and amino acids from the leaves, where they are made by photosynthesis, to the rest of the plant.

Uses of Glucose The glucose produced during photosynthesis is used for a number of things in the cells of the plant. List up to five different products made using the glucose produced during photosynthesis. For each product, explain how it is used in the plant cells.
