Convection: A Current Event Maureen Shankman PK Yonge Developmental Research School Gainesville, FL

Convection: A Current Event LHS GEMS: UC Berkeley Focuses on Energy Transformations Found in 6 th, 7 th and 8 th Grade Benchmarks Crosses Life, Physical and Earth/Space Science Quick Unit: 3 Sessions (Gould, 1996)

NGSS: Next Generation Science Standards Strand: PS3.B: Conservation of energy and energy transfer MS-ESS2-6. Develop and use a model to describe how unequal heating and rotation of the Earth cause patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates. MS-PS3-3 Energy is spontaneously transferred out of hotter regions or objects and into colder ones..

Common Core RST Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks. (MS-PS3-3),(MS-PS3-3) RST Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table). MP.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

DISCOVERY LEARNING Explain Explore Elaborate Evaluate INQUIRY Engage

The Cycle Explained Engagement Object, event or question used to engage students. Connections facilitated between what students know and can do. Exploration Objects and phenomena are explored. Hands-on activities, with guidance. Explanation Students explain their understanding of concepts and processes. New concepts and skills are introduced asconceptual clarity and cohesion are sought. Elaboration Activities allow students to apply concepts in contexts, and build on or extend understanding and skill Evaluation Students assess their knowledge, skills and abilities. Activities permit evaluation of student development and lesson effectiveness. (Tanner, 2010)

ENGAGE: Demonstration What causes this to happen?

SET UP TRIALS A AND B TRIAL C TRIAL D

Explore Helpful tips Make sure you wait a minute to settle the water. Use a SMALL amount of food coloring for your drop. Tip of Medicine Dropper needs to hit the bottom of the pan Best viewing is using a white sheet of paper behind the pan to see movement from the side. Trials A and B drop is in same place C Drop is in different place

CHART WHAT YOU OBSERVED In words and pictures, describe each of the trials Trial ATrial B Trial CTrial D

Explain: Science Behind It The heat source under the center of the pan heats the water over it. The hot water rises to the surface, spreads out toward the edges of the pan. As it moves farther from the heat source, the water cools and sinks toward the bottom of the pan. – CONVECTION CURRENT Heat transfer occurs when two objects or systems are at different temperatures. Energy moves out of higher temperature objects and into lower temperature ones, cooling the former and heating the latter. This transfer happens in three different ways—by conduction within solids, by the flow of liquid or gas ( convection), and by radiation, which can travel across space

Elaborate/Extend Session 3: Convection and Wind Allows students to see that convections happen in gases Apply a generalizing to the understanding of wind and heating with convection
